How we do it

We research the Internet on an ongoing basis to determine geographic and network connection information about all assigned and allocated IP addresses on the Internet. We publish a database weekly that contains this information.

How deployment works

You query the Neustar IP Intelligence database with an IP address and it returns the location, such as [geocity], [geostate], confidence and network intelligence information. Access to the Neustar IP Intelligence data can be through our GeoDirectory Server or on our On-Demand service. Installation is simple – in as little as 30 minutes you can be retrieving the data.

Over the past ten years Neustar has built a powerful and sophisticated research system for understanding and interpreting worldwide IP address data. We are devoted to improving the process of mapping the Internet. Neustar IP Intelligence actively collects and analyzes data 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We have data collectors all over the world that feed our database of information, and that information is processed by both intelligent automated algorithms as well as experienced human analysts. Our analysts and algorithms work together, each indicating parts of the network the other should focus on as well as providing checks and balances that ensure quality and improve each other’s output and processes. No other provider has as mature a geolocation collection and processing system as Quova.

Collection Network
All over the world, at key points of the Internet, Neustar has positioned data collection centers that continually assess and monitor the ever-changing infrastructure of the Internet. These collection points gather regional network data and can be remotely directed to analyze specific aspects of web traffic and triangulate specific locations across the Internet to more clearly define the location of a user’s access point.

Network Geography Analysts
The Internet is an ever changing environment and mapping it successfully takes an understanding of its structure and the constant application of resources dedicated to detecting changes and identifying new assignments and connections. Neustar analysts help decipher clues to how networks are configured. This team provides the human element of the system. Our GeoGeeks, who are based in the US and Europe and speak over a dozen languages, are IP intelligence experts who draw upon the depth of their knowledge and experience to review the information from our data collection network and manually research networks that comprise the Internet. In addition, our GeoGeeks scour key areas of the Internet for the latest and most up-to-date information available. This ensures highly accurate conclusions about the geographic origin and routing of Web traffic.

Partner and Customer Data Feedback Loop
Neustar collects information from our worldwide customer base and uses that data to continuously improve the quality of Neustar’s services. Sixty percent of Neustar’s customers report data back to the collection and analysis system, enabling Neustar to visualize traffic patterns across major Web sites. With this information, Neustar identifies high-usage networks and can concentrate our analysis on the networks most frequently affecting our customer base.

Synthesis and Production
Once all of the data is collected and reviewed, we begin a process we call synthesis. This process utilizes our sophisticated machine learning engine to analyze the information and produce our weekly data files. A manual quality review of the synthesis results is completed by the team before it is released to our customers. We can proudly say we have not missed a release since this process and system was instituted – we have had over 400 uninterrupted weeks of service.
